Bloodstone is a green variety of chalcedony more commonly known as jasper. The classical variety of bloodstone has red spots of hematite distributed throughout the green jasper but all green jasper with red incusions is now referred to as bloodstone.


Bloodstone was more popular in the past when it was known as heliotrope and it was a birthstone for March. It was also believed to have many occult properties. In the middle ages bloodstone was revered as a talisman stone and the red spots in the green jasper were related to the blood of Christ
