Poppy Jasper

Poppy jasper is a predominately reddish colored chalcedony often with yellowish orange tones. Sometimes it is orbicular which refers to the round spots found on the surface of the stone. The origin of the name jasper comes from Persian and meant “spotted stone”.

Another form of poppy jasper is brecciated which refers to the natural broken up and angular pieces within the stone which have occurred in its evolution.

Poppy jasper has been found in many ancient archaeological sites from around the world. Different areas have variations in the mix of colors and the patterns throughout the stone. There are also many location specific names for this and all types of jasper.
